St. Petersburg, FL May 13, 2004 -– AKP, Inc. today announces that recent design enhancements to their line of products have perfected the computer keyboard stand. In 1997, the simple idea of creating a support that was not attached to the desk prompted the design of the first AKP—an Adjustable Keyboard Podium. The AKP is a free-standing support designed to hold a computer keyboard and mouse or laptop. Perfection comes from a combination of modified office chair components and specifically designed tops that are cut by the most up-to-date computerized routers.
Inventor, Gerard Scannell Jr., comments “Using a support attached to the desk was too static and uncomfortable. My solution was to design a free standing support that would position the keyboard and mouse directly over my lap, while sitting back in my chair, and staying a comfortable distance from the monitor.” Scannell added, “Thinking out-of-the-box enabled me to design a line of products suitable for any sitting or standing application.”
In 1997, this fresh new idea combined a small five star base, a pneumatic cylinder from a drafting chair, a height adjustment mechanism with an extended lever and a twelve by thirty inch rectangular top mounted in the middle. To make adjustments easy the pressure in the pneumatic cylinder was modified to exert only thirty pounds of resistance. The combination of these components produced the first free-standing support specifically designed to support a computer keyboard and mouse or laptop.
In June of 2000, AKP, Inc. introduced the OfficePro series. Advancements in computerized routers allowed the tops to be redesigned. The top of the OfficePro/10, the flagship model, was reshaped so it could be mounted in an offset position. This allows the letter keys on the keyboard to be positioned directly in front of the user while increasing the area used for the mouse. This unique keyboard position keeps the user directly in front of the monitor and is the only keyboard support with this feature. Mounting the top in an offset position was the next step in perfecting this design.
Scannell, President of AKP, Inc., stated, “Since June of 2000 our entire line boasts a 100% satisfaction rate. That is almost four years of complete approval by our customers. Now our latest enhancements, three profile settings and a document holder, have completed the AKP’s transformation into the perfect keyboard stand.”
Since 1997, AKP, Inc. remained committed to developing their combination of unusual components into the perfect keyboard stand. Proof of that commitment and success was the inclusion of the OfficePro/10 model selected to be featured in PARADE Magazine, Gadget Guide column, last October.
AKP, Inc. is a small business located in St. Petersburg, FL. The AKP, as it is called, has been developed into an entire line of products that will satisfy any sitting or standing application. The patent office has recognized the significance of the design and has provided protection under a broad patent.
